Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2024: Devuthani Ekadashi is a major festival in Hinduism, also known as Kartik Ekadashi. On this day Lord Vishnu wakes up from four months of Yoganidra, hence it is also called Devotthan Ekadashi.
According to the Hindu calendar, this date holds special significance, as it is considered the day of awakening of the gods. This day marks the beginning of auspicious functions like marriage, house warming, mundan, which were considered prohibited during Chaturmas (from Shravan to Kartik month).

Devuthani Ekadashi 2024 auspicious time
According to the Vedic calendar, this year the Ekadashi date of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month will start at 6.46 pm on 11 November 2024 and end at 4.04 pm on 12 November 2024. According to Udaya Tithi, the fast of Devuthani Ekadashi will be observed on Tuesday, November 12. The fast can be broken between 6.42 am to 8.51 am on the morning of 13th November.
Rules of Devuthani Ekadashi
It is necessary to remain completely pure on this day. Therefore, after taking bath, worship should be done wearing pure clothes only. Lord Vishnu should be especially worshiped on this day, because this is the day of God’s awakening.
Along with Lord Vishnu, Mother Lakshmi and Tulsi are also worshipped. Satvik food should be eaten on the day of Ekadashi. Consumption of onion and garlic is also prohibited on this day. Night vigil is also an important part of Devuthani Ekadashi. (Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2024)
Some people stay awake the whole night, absorbed in the devotion of Lord Vishnu and perform kirtan. This night is considered to be the night of awakening of Lord Vishnu, hence there is importance of staying awake throughout the night.
Devuthani Ekadashi worship method
On the day of Devuthani Ekadashi, wake up first thing in the morning and take bath. Decorate the puja place with flowers, lamps and incense. Install the idol or picture of Lord Vishnu and Lakshmi. Bathe the idol or picture with Ganga water. Offer sandalwood, kumkum and flowers. Perform Aarti of Lord Vishnu and Lakshmi by lighting lamps.
Chant the mantras of Lord Vishnu and Lakshmi ji. Donation has great importance on the day of Devuthani Ekadashi. By giving food and dakshina to Brahmins one attains virtue. Donating grains, clothes, or other items to the poor and needy on this day is considered very auspicious.
Importance of Devuthani Ekadashi
The importance of Devuthani Ekadashi is linked to the fact that on this day Lord Vishnu wakes up from yoga nidra. According to Hindu belief, Lord Vishnu remains in Yoga Nidra for four months, which is called Chaturmas. During Chaturmas, especially marriages, Bhoomi Pujan and other auspicious works are postponed, on the day of Devuthani Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu is awakened, and auspicious works are started again.
