The amount approved in the 2025 regular budget is about $1 million more than UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres proposed in October. He presented the proposal to the Fifth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, which is responsible for examining administrative and budgetary matters.
The regular budget of the United Nations manages programs in political affairs, international justice and law, regional cooperation for development, human rights and humanitarian activities, public information and other important areas.
In parallel, the organization has a separate budget for peacekeeping operations, with a financial period from 1 July to 30 June. On the other hand, regular budgets are prepared on a calendar year basis.
Aid to landlocked developing countries
The UN General Assembly also passed an important action plan for landlocked developing countries for the decade 2024-2034, which aims to address the development challenges faced by these countries.
Due to lack of direct access to the sea coast, these countries have to face various problems in the field of trade and economy. They often have to rely on other countries for trade routes, which raises prices, causes delays and leaves them behind in global competition.
This action plan identifies five key priorities:
– Promoting sustainable economic growth through innovation and structural change
– Promotion of trade integration at the regional level
– Improvement of transport system and connectivity
– Building climate resilience
– Implementation of effective strategies to implement the plan
