Khyari said he would increase cooperation with the United Nations and the Arab League

UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Khaled Khyari addressed the Security Council on Thursday and praised the Middle East, which has been plagued by constant conflict and war, from the fragile ceasefire in Gaza to the crises in Syria, Yemen, Sudan and Libya. He underlined the important role of the Arab League in promoting stability.

He praised the Arab League and regional organizations for their long-term partnership with the United Nations, which spanned nearly eight decades.

“The extreme challenge in the Middle East comes at a time when the international system is facing problems,” he said.

They emphasized the importance of joint efforts, including strengthening multilateralism and trust in international institutions.

He said greater coordination is needed to address growing conflicts, crises and broader global issues such as climate change and inequality.

“We are committed to continuing our partnership with the Arab League to enhance our joint efforts to improve the lives of people in the Arab region and beyond,” he said.

Support ceasefire and two-state solution

Khaled Khyari hailed the recent ceasefire and hostage release deal in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territory of Gaza, calling it a “ray of hope” for Palestinians and hostages to be reunited with their families.

He also highlighted the importance of mediation efforts by Egypt, Qatar and the United States in achieving a ceasefire agreement in Gaza.

Khaled Khyari said the Arab League has always supported the Palestinian people, including efforts to garner international support for a ceasefire.

He urged all stakeholders to work towards a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine through dialogue.

“The international community has a collective responsibility to support efforts for a just and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” said Khaled Khyari.

“A negotiated two-state solution is the only viable path to ensure peace, security and coexistence for both Israelis and Palestinians.”

Khaled Khyari stressed the importance of cooperation in Syria and Lebanon as the countries look to a new future after years of conflict and war and instability.

They stressed the importance of joint efforts to resolve the crisis in Sudan, in addition to Yemen and Libya, where the Arab League is supporting efforts to promote dialogue and mediation.

Youth, Peace and Security

Speaking to Security Council ambassadors, Khalid Khyari said engaged youth, who represent about 60 percent of the Arab region’s population, are another priority for peacebuilding and development efforts.

The UN supported the Arab League’s work on the Youth, Peace and Security Agenda, including the development of the Arab Regional Youth, Peace and Security Strategy.

“Implementing this strategy is an investment in the future of the entire region,” he said.

He emphasized the need for youth voices to be heard and opportunities to strengthen peace and stability.
