High Court raised questions on Thane encounter

Mumbai. Bombay High Court on Wednesday raised questions on the encounter of Akshay Shinde, accused of sexually abusing two minor girls in Badlapur, Maharashtra. The court said that it is difficult to consider it an encounter because the accused was shot in the head. Regarding this, the High Court asked the Maharashtra government – how can we believe that four officers could not handle an accused. He was also handcuffed, if it was a situation of self-defense then the accused should have been shot in the leg, not in the head.

The High Court said- If the police officer who fired the bullet is an Assistant Police Inspector, then he cannot say that he did not know how to react. He should know where to fire. The court said- As soon as the accused pressed the trigger, four people could easily overpower him. He was not a very strong man. It is very difficult to accept this. This cannot be called an encounter.

It is worth noting that Akshay’s father has filed a petition in Bombay High Court demanding SIT investigation of the encounter. The bench of Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Prithviraj Chavan heard the matter. The next hearing will be on October 3. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has defended the police action. He said that the police shot Akshay Shinde in self-defense. The Chief Minister said that if the accused had escaped, the opposition would have asked whether the police had show pieces and not guns in their hands. They would have said why did we let him escape.
