When elections were held for a vacant seat in the Standing Committee of Delhi Municipal Corporation, the Aam Aadmi Party boycotted it. AAP had announced the candidate earlier. But when the time came for voting, she backed down and boycotted the elections along with the Congress. The result was that the BJP candidate won in one-sided voting. The Aam Aadmi Party is blaming the Lieutenant Governor and the BJP for this. It is being said that the Lieutenant Governor strangled democracy because the Mayor has the right to conduct elections. The Mayor had kept the election date as October 5, while the Lieutenant Governor forcefully held the elections on September 27.
The question is as to when the elections were held but if the Aam Aadmi Party has the majority then it should have contested the elections. In terms of numbers, Aam Aadmi Party is still the largest party with 124 seats in the 250-seat Delhi Municipal Corporation. After this, BJP has 115 seats and Congress has nine seats. Even if Congress does not support and boycotts the House, AAP still has its 124 councillors. Still, if he did not participate in the election, it means that he is suspecting cross-voting by more than 10 of these councilors. It is being told that the Aam Aadmi Party was nervous after three councilors switched sides and joined the BJP. She did not want to be exposed in the elections. If she had contested the elections and lost, it would have been more shameful. Therefore, he boycotted the elections raising the issue of rules. But mayor elections will have to be held and in that too he will have to face similar problems.
