UNGA79: Western countries must stop looting and meddling - Syrian Foreign Minister

Instead of promoting sustainable development for all, some countries are plundering resources and unilaterally imposing sanctions that encourage misery.

Foreign Minister Sabbagh said that the situation in Syria is bad for the last decade due to terrorism, economic blockade and media incitement.

He said Syria took care of its people while continuing to fight terrorism. According to Foreign Minister Sabbagh, the Israeli occupation of Arab areas has continued since 1967 and the Security Council has failed to end it.

This includes Syria’s Golan Heights, where the Western world’s collective ‘true intentions have been exposed.’ He accused the United States of obstructing the Security Council from fulfilling its responsibilities and expressed his determination to liberate the Syrian Golan from Israeli occupation.

Bassam Sabbagh condemned the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people and the attempt to disband the United Nations Organization for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA).

We emphasize the need for accountability for war crimes committed by Israel, he said.

In the wake of attacks in Syria and Lebanon, the foreign minister warned that continued Israeli aggression without restraint could lead to unforeseen consequences.

Bassam Sabbagh has accused some Western countries of meddling in Syria, particularly the US’s illegal military presence and support for separatist groups.

In addition, Syria’s natural resources are being plundered. He called for the immediate, unconditional lifting of unilaterally imposed sanctions, which are “collective punishment for the Syrian people and a form of economic terrorism.”

Bassam Sabbagh said that reconstruction efforts in Syria are progressing, the fight against terrorism continues and efforts are also being made for national reconciliation.

Plans are being worked on to take back Syrians who have taken refuge outside the country, and political initiatives are being taken through negotiations, diplomacy and international cooperation.

Foreign Minister Sabbagh said that Syria is busy healing its wounds and to succeed in this effort, it is important that Western countries stop politicizing humanitarian work and attach it to political conditions.

Appealing to rid the Middle East of weapons of mass destruction, he said Israel’s nuclear stockpile must be disarmed.
