Detaining Sonam Wangchuk undemocratic: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday criticized the government for detaining Ladakh environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk and said such action was undemocratic and unacceptable. Describing Wangchuk’s detention as unacceptable, Mr Gandhi said that this ‘Chakravyuh and arrogance’ of Modi will also be broken. “The detention of Wangchuk ji and hundreds of Ladakhis who were peacefully marching for environment and constitutional rights is unacceptable,” he said in his post on Twitter. He further said “Why are elderly citizens standing for the future of Ladakh being detained at the Delhi border? Modi ji, like the farmers, this Chakravyuh will also be broken, and your ego will also be broken. You have to listen to the voice of Ladakh. Shri Kharge wrote on Twitter that the arrogance of the Modi government, intoxicated with power, has detained a group of citizens who were peacefully marching from Ladakh to Delhi. This is nothing but a cowardly action and is very undemocratic.

“In Ladakh, there is a growing wave of public support, with widespread calls for protection of tribal communities under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution,” he said. Instead, the Modi government wants to exploit the ecologically sensitive Himalayan glaciers of Ladakh to benefit its close friends. This incident shows us that the fight against the autocracy of the Modi government is not over. Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal also criticized the government and said “Wangchuk ji’s arrest shows that the government is afraid of anyone speaking for its rights. Ladakh has been silenced, its democratic rights snatched away. He said, “This protest is months old and the BJP is foolish to think that such cowardly actions will stop those who have set out on a Gandhian campaign.” The Modi government is bent upon repeating the sins that have led to their downfall.
