Kolkata. Former Rajya Sabha member and BJP leader Roopa Ganguly has been arrested. She was sitting on a dharna since Wednesday night in front of a police station in South Kolkata demanding the release of local woman BJP leader Ruby Das. Das was also among the BJP supporters arrested on Wednesday evening. All of them were protesting against the death of a school child. The child was hit by the payloader. It was being used by Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) employees to repair the road. As soon as the news of the arrest of the activists was received, Ganguly reached the local Bansdroni police station in South Kolkata and started a protest there demanding the release of Das. Ganguly claimed that Das and other BJP supporters were carrying out a peaceful protest when they were attacked by local Trinamool Congress workers.
He also alleged that instead of taking action against the attackers, the police arrested the protesters themselves. Ganguly sat on strike the whole night and was finally arrested by the Kolkata Police around 10 am on Thursday. He was soon taken away from the Bansdroni police station premises in a police vehicle. After his arrest, Ganguly alleged that the police did not even allow him to take his bag. Meanwhile, according to the police, Ganguly has been arrested for obstructing the work of policemen. Meanwhile, there is tremendous anger among the local people over the unfortunate death of the schoolboy. People are angry that Trinamool Congress councilor Anita Kar Majumdar did not reach the spot till hours after the accident. Roopa Ganguly is a famous name in Hindi and Bengali cinema world. She became known in every household with the character of Draupadi played in the TV show ‘Mahabharata’. Later she joined BJP and also became a Rajya Sabha member.
