Ocha: One year since the October 7 attack by Hamas, the agony of death, destruction, displacement

The agency said 1,200 Israeli and foreign civilians were killed and about 5,500 wounded in the attack.

Since then, Israeli attacks on Gaza have killed more than 41,000 people and wounded more than 96,000, according to the local health ministry. Thousands of people are buried under the rubble.

The organization says that nearly every person in Gaza has been displaced, many of them multiple times, and that no place in Gaza is safe.

Ordinary people are facing severe deprivation with health care, food, electricity and humanitarian assistance not available to them or at a very limited level. Children’s entire academic year is wasted.

Additionally, schools hosting displaced families have been repeatedly bombed, health care workers and hospitals have been systematically attacked, and aid convoys have been shot at and blocked, OCHA said.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces’ use of lethal force in the West Bank has increased casualties, caused widespread destruction and displaced people. These included violence against Jewish residents and demolition of homes.

Committed to helping

Over the past year, Israel has blocked humanitarian aid from reaching Gaza, bringing aid operations to a standstill.

OCHA said more than 300 humanitarian aid workers were killed, most of them from UNRWA, the United Nations agency helping Palestinian refugees.

It is the highest number of UN workers killed in a single crisis, making Gaza one of the most dangerous places in the world for aid workers.

Yet, despite the enormous risks, humanitarian aid workers continue to provide the services they can.

He administered doses to 560,000 children in the polio vaccination campaign.

“This has been an unrelenting tragedy for 12 months – it must stop,” said OCHA Acting Under-Secretary-General Joyce Mayusa.

“Member states must use their influence to ensure respect for international humanitarian law and human rights,” he said. “It also includes respect for decisions of the International Court of Justice.”

“They must also work to end impunity. It is already too late for an immediate ceasefire and lasting peace.”
