Srinagar. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday approved the Omar government’s proposal to give full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. The proposal to give full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir was passed in the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday. Deputy Chief Minister of the state Surinder Kumar Choudhary has said regarding this – Center should fulfill its promise and restore the status of the state, this is our right. We are asking for what he already promised.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi in two days regarding the restoration of full statehood status. Soon after the formation of the new government, Omar Abdullah’s government had passed a proposal to restore the status of full state of Jammu and Kashmir. However, opposition parties raised the question as to why the state government has not passed the proposal for restoration of Article 370. It is noteworthy that on August 5, 2019, along with removing Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir, the Central Government abolished the statehood status of the state and divided it into two union territories, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Omar Abdullah had also said during the assembly elections that the proposal to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir would be approved in the first cabinet meeting itself. After taking oath as Chief Minister on October 16, he passed this proposal the very next day. After this, the People’s Democratic Party said about the decision of the Omar cabinet that it is a big shock. PDP raised questions as to why the Omar government passed only the proposal for restoration of statehood. A decision should also have been taken on the restoration of Article 370.
