Jakarta. According to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck the country’s eastern North Maluku province on Monday. Initially the agency reported the earthquake’s intensity as 5.6, but later revised it to 5.8. The earthquake occurred at 10:24 am Jakarta time. Its center was located 7 km north of South Halmahera Regency at a depth of 11 km below sea level. The earthquake was felt at intensity level III to IV on the modified Mercalli intensity (MMI) scale in Labuha town and Obi Island.
No tsunami warning was issued because the earthquake was not powerful enough to cause large waves. Fehbi Alting, head of the provincial disaster management agency, told Xinhua that the earthquake caused no damage or casualties. Indonesia, an island group located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, is home to more than 120 active volcanoes. Earthquakes occur frequently here.
