this is the real story
According to the legend, once Mahadev was sleeping and Ganesh ji was guarding the door. When Parshuram reached there, Ganesh ji stopped him at the door. Parshuram got angry and started fighting with Ganesh ji. In the war, Parshuram attacked Ganesh ji with the axe given by Lord Shiva. Due to which one tooth of Ganesh ji broke.
Mother Parvati made soft modaks
Due to the broken teeth during the war, Ganesh ji started having trouble chewing food. Seeing Bappa’s condition, Mother Parvati prepared modaks for him. Modaks are very soft and do not require chewing. Therefore, Ganesh ji ate modaks to his heart’s content. Since then, modak became Gajanan’s favorite dish.
Why do we offer 21 Modaks?
According to the legend, once Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha went to the house of Sage Atri’s wife Goddess Anusuya in the forest. As soon as they reached here, Lord Shiva and Ganesha started feeling hungry, after which they arranged food for everyone. After eating food, the hunger of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva was satiated, but Ganpati Bappa’s stomach was not getting filled with anything. To satisfy Bappa’s hunger, Anusuya fed him all kinds of dishes, but his hunger was not satiated.
Tradition of offering modak
When Ganesh ji’s hunger was not satiated, Goddess Anusuiya thought that maybe some sweet could help fill his stomach. After which she gave a piece of sweet to Ganesh ji and as soon as he ate it, Ganpati Bappa burped and his hunger was satiated. As soon as Ganesh ji’s hunger was satiated, Lord Shiva also burped 21 times and his hunger was satiated. After which, on Mata Parvati’s asking, Goddess Anusuiya told that the sweet was modak. After which the tradition of offering modak in Ganesh worship started.
