Both the leaders had come to the Russian city of Kazan to participate in the BRICS conference, where they had bilateral talks on the sidelines of the conference. It is noteworthy that in June 2020, there was a violent clash between the soldiers of the two countries in Galvan Valley, after which there was a deadlock in the relations between the two.
However, in the bilateral talks held on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in the Russian city of Kazan, both the leaders stressed on resolving the border dispute as soon as possible, maintaining mutual cooperation and mutual trust. In a conversation of about 50 minutes, Prime Minister Modi said – Maintaining peace and stability on the border should be our priority. Mutual trust, mutual respect and mutual sensitivity should remain the foundation of our relations. I am confident that we will talk with an open mind and our discussion will be constructive.
Prime Minister Modi said- We are formally meeting after five years. We welcome the consensus that has been reached on the problems that have arisen on the border in the last four years. Maintaining peace on the border should be our priority. Earlier, Chinese President Xi Jinping said that both the countries should handle their differences properly. We must strengthen dialogue and mutual cooperation to realize our development dreams. He said- India and China should work together to keep their relations stable, which can help in achieving the development goals of both the countries.
After the talks between Prime Minister Modi and President Xi, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri told the media that both the leaders have welcomed the agreement on patrolling on the Line of Actual Control or LAC. The Foreign Secretary said that a special representative has been appointed to resolve the issues between the two countries. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval will be the special representative from the Indian side and Foreign Minister Wang Yi from the Chinese side. Both of them will hold a formal meeting soon. Earlier, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri had said on October 21 that an agreement has been reached between India and China regarding patrolling on LAC in eastern Ladakh. This will bring back the situation before May 2020. Both countries reached this consensus after several rounds of military commander and diplomatic meetings.
