weakening roots

Whatever status India has in the world today, Indian engineers and tech workers have played an important role in making it. That is why it is a matter of concern that instead of these roots becoming stronger in India, Are becoming weak.

One yardstick to predict the future of a country is the condition of science, technology, engineering and mathematics education there. How much attraction there is in the society towards obtaining these degrees and what opportunities are available for these degree holders, these two are important aspects. The role of India’s engineers and tech workers has been important in making India achieve whatever status it has today in the world. That is why it is a matter of concern that instead of becoming stronger in India, these roots are becoming weaker. Consider some statistics: 637 seats available for admission through CET in Computer Science remain vacant this year. Civil and mechanical engineering courses are anyway losing their attraction.

Only 2,883 seats out of 5,723 available in Civil Engineering were admitted. Out of the available 5,977 seats in Mechanical Engineering, only 2,783 could be filled. Whereas the general opinion is that civil and mechanical engineering and other branches related to them are the foundation of engineering. But as job opportunities for their graduates have decreased, the attraction of youth towards them has also decreased. Although more jobs are being created globally in these fields, a major problem with Indian degree holders is the quality. Some experts have even said that about 90 percent of the students pursuing engineering degrees in India do not have the skills required in modern science and engineering.

Since studies like medicine and engineering have gradually become out of the reach of the general middle class, admission is mostly taken by wealthy students, who are believed to have found it difficult to get admission if there was wider competition. This means that the scope of real competition for such education has narrowed. This has affected the skills of degree holders. Whereas today the demand in companies is for highly skilled youth who can do skill development with the advancing technology.
