Concern over Israeli attack on Iran, calls for immediate cessation of hostilities

According to media reports, explosions were heard in the capital Tehran and surrounding areas at 2.15 PM local time on Friday-Saturday night.

Shortly thereafter, the Israeli military confirmed that military targets in Iran had been targeted. The Iranian army says that at least four soldiers have lost their lives in these attacks.

Stephane Dujarric, a spokesman for the top UN official, issued a statement on his behalf on Saturday, expressing his deep concern over the continued tension and conflict in the Middle East region.

Tensions are high in the Middle East against the backdrop of the Gaza war, and Iran launched missile and drone strikes on Israel earlier this month, which have now been followed up by Israeli airstrikes.

He said that all activities that escalate the conflict are condemnable and must be stopped immediately.

The UN chief called on all parties in the entire region, including Gaza and Lebanon, to stop all military action.

According to him, maximum efforts should be made to save the region from plunging into full-scale war. In the wake of this, Antonio Guterres has called for a return to the diplomatic table.
