After the BJP government came to power at the Centre, one dispute which has become permanent is that of language. In some form or the other, this controversy would come to the fore every few days. This time the controversy has arisen because of Kerala’s Communist MP John Brittas and Central Government Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu. In fact, Union Minister Bittu wrote a letter in Hindi to John Brittas to answer the issues raised by him. In response, Brittas sent a reply to Bittu in Malayalam language. After that, the controversy of Hindi vs Malayalam and Hindi vs other South Indian languages has re-emerged under the same pretext.
John Brittas later said that he has to face such things often. In fact, under a policy, leaders of BJP and its allies speak in Hindi in Parliament and government ministers reply in Hindi only. The ministers who can speak English and who used to speak in English earlier have also started speaking Hindi only. Brittas and other South Indian MPs say that a practice was already going on that answers to South Indian MPs were given in English. But now it has been changed. The minister replies in Hindi. Therefore, Brittas sent its reply in Malayalam, which is accepted as the official language of Parliament like Hindi.
