Beirut. Hezbollah has fired more than 100 rockets at more than 30 settlements in the western Galilee and a major intelligence base in northern Israel. Hezbollah has taken this action to avenge the Israeli air strike on the southern suburbs of Beirut, in which at least 12 people were killed and 66 others were injured. The Israeli attack targeted a building in the Jamous area of Dahieh, a suburb of Beirut, the Lebanese Health Ministry said. Rescue operations by rescue teams are ongoing. Local TV footage showed heavy damage and chaos in the densely populated area. Lebanese media reported that Ibrahim Aqeel, a member of the Hezbollah Jihad Council, was targeted in the attack. Israel Defense Forces spokesman Daniel Hagari said Aqeel was killed along with other senior commanders of the Lebanese group during the operation.
However, Hezbollah has not given any information about Aqeel’s condition. Earlier on Friday, the Israeli military said about 120 projectiles were fired from Lebanon into northern Israel, raising alarm in the country’s occupied Golan Heights, Safed and Upper Galilee. No injuries were reported in Israel. Lebanese military sources said Israeli air strikes targeted six locations in southern Lebanon, while artillery shelled 11 border towns during the day. Tensions have escalated sharply along the Israel-Lebanon border after two explosions in communications equipment in Lebanon earlier this week killed 37 people and injured 2,931. The Lebanese government condemned the blasts as a violation of sovereignty and demanded an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council. Hezbollah blamed Israel for targeting its units and vowed to retaliate.
