Chennai. A total of 13 coaches of the Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express derailed after colliding with a standing goods train at Kavarappatai near Chennai on Friday night. An official said that three coaches of the train caught fire after the derailment. Many passengers traveling in the train have suffered injuries. He has been admitted to nearby hospitals. According to sources, it is not yet known how many passengers have suffered serious injuries. Meanwhile, Southern Railway officials said no serious injuries have been reported so far. Mysuru-Darbhanga Express runs between Darbhanga Junction in Bihar and Mysuru Junction in Karnataka. A team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has reached Kavarappatai in Tiruvallur district, where coaches of the Bagmati Express derailed after hitting a parked goods train. The NDRF team has already shifted the injured to nearby medical centres. In a statement, Southern Railways said: “Train number 12578 passed through Ponneri at 8.27 pm. The crew suffered a heavy blow and the train entered the loop line.
Some coaches derailed. Train services between Chennai and Vijayawada have been temporarily suspended due to the derailment, the statement said. In videos and pictures circulated on social media, flames can be seen beneath some of the derailed coaches and passengers are being rescued. Following the accident, police and fire departments as well as local residents immediately became involved in initial rescue efforts. Ambulances from nearby hospitals were used to provide health care and transfer the injured passengers to hospitals. General Manager of Southern Railway and Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) along with senior officials reached the spot to monitor the rescue operations. A unit of Railway Protection Force has also reached for assistance. According to sources, nearby hospitals in Kavarappatai are on high alert to deal with any emergency.
