DY Chandrachud’s Final Message : On the last day of his tenure as Chief Justice of India, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud delivered a message from the ceremonial bench and acknowledged the fact that he would no longer serve as the country’s supreme judge. He said….from tomorrow I will not be able to give justice, but I am satisfied.

Justice Chandrachud assumed office on November 9, 2022, and bid farewell to his post today after two years of tenure. Recalling a light-hearted moment with his Registrar Judicial, he said, “When my Registrar Judicial asked me when the ceremony time should start,

So I said 2 o’clock, because I thought that would clear a lot of pending matters. But I thought – would anyone really be here at 2pm on Friday? Or will I just keep looking at myself on the screen?

The 51st Chief Justice of India will take oath on November 11.

Reflecting on his career, Justice Chandrachud described the role of judges as akin to that of pilgrims who come to the court every day with a commitment to serve.

He said- The work we do has the potential to make or break matters. He paid tribute to the “great judges” who graced this court and handed over their responsibility to the generation that came after them.

He also said he felt confident leaving the bench in the hands of Justice Sanjiv Khanna, whom he praised as a capable leader.

If I have ever hurt anyone in the court, please forgive me and quoted Michhami Dukkadam, which means “May all my wrong actions be forgiven. Lawyers and members of the Bar gathered to honor the former Chief Justice and described him as the “rock star” of the judiciary.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who has been named as his successor and will be sworn in as the 51st Chief Justice of India on November 11.

Justice Chandrachud has given many historic decisions

Sharing a personal anecdote of Justice Chandrachud’s love for samosas, he said that samosas were served in almost every meeting, although the Chief Justice himself avoided eating them.

Many changes took place in the court during Justice Chandrachud’s tenure, including the establishment of Mitti Café, which works to empower persons with disabilities.

Apart from this, many other projects like dedicated bar room for women lawyers and beautification of the Supreme Court complex were also implemented. (DY Chandrachud’s Final Message)

In his two-year tenure, Justice Chandrachud delivered several landmark judgments. Notably, he chaired the Constitution Bench that upheld the abrogation of Article 370, thereby reshaping the politics of Jammu and Kashmir.

It ordered elections to be held by September 2024 and stressed the need to restore statehood “as soon as possible”.
