Ban on Chhath on the banks of polluted Yamuna

New Delhi. Delhi High Court has refused permission to celebrate Chhath Puja on the banks of Yamuna river. The high court said on Wednesday that the river water is highly polluted. Celebrating this festival can spoil people’s health. The bench of Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela said that arrangements have been made to celebrate Chhath at more than a thousand places in Delhi, people can go there and celebrate the festival.

Actually, Purvanchal Nav Nirman Sansthan had filed a petition, in which it was said that the ban on Chhath Puja should be removed. It is noteworthy that white foam is visible at many places in Yamuna river in Delhi. The Delhi government did nothing for the whole year but just before Chhath, an attempt was made to remove it by spraying chemicals. But on the contrary, the water became more poisonous. People should not go into the poisonous waters of Yamuna for Chhath Puja, hence a ban has been imposed on performing Chhath Puja here.

During the hearing on Wednesday, the court said that people’s health has deteriorated due to taking a dip in Yamuna. He even had to be admitted to the hospital. In such a situation, giving any kind of order on this petition can have a negative impact on the health of the people. The court also expressed concern over the increasing pollution of Yamuna and said- We cannot continue releasing sewage into the river. This is not industrial sewage, it is human sewage. The court said- Illegal colonies have been built on the banks of the river. Their untreated sewage is going into the river.
