Johannesburg. South Africa’s Test captain Temba Bavuma has been ruled out of the first Test match against Bangladesh due to being unfit. Cricket South Africa has included all-rounder Dewald Brevis and fast bowler Lungi Ngidi in the Test team. Brewis has been included as cover, while Ngidi will replace injured fast bowler Nandre Burger, who will be out of the tour due to a back stress fracture. Bavuma was ruled out of South Africa’s third ODI against Ireland in Abu Dhabi after he injured his left elbow while completing a run at the non-striker’s end in the 12th over of South Africa’s innings. CSA said in its statement that Bavuma will travel to Dhaka with the South African team on Tuesday and will continue his recovery under the care of the Proteas medical team in preparation for the second Test starting on October 29 in Chittagong.
Aiden Markram will captain South Africa in the first Test match against Bangladesh starting from October 21 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka. Brewis, on the other hand, was included in the Test squad for the first time after representing South Africa A against Sri Lanka A last month, where he scored 49 and 74 in the second four-day match. Brewis, who represents Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL, played two T20 matches for South Africa in 2023 and has played 12 first-class matches so far. South Africa’s Test team will gather for a red-ball camp at the Center of Excellence in Pretoria from October 12-14.
