Big uproar in JPC over Waqf Board

New Delhi. Till now the opposition parties were staging a walkout in the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) formed to consider the bill to change the Waqf Board law, but on Tuesday it created a big uproar. Trinamool Congress and BJP MPs clashed during the discussion on the bill. There was a heated argument between Trinamool MP Kalyan Banerjee and BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay. During this, Banerjee picked up the glass bottle kept in front of her and broke it by hitting it on the table.

According to news agency PTI report, Kalyan Banerjee also threw the broken bottle towards JPC President BJP MP Jagdambika Pal, although she was saved. After this uproar, BJP demanded suspension of Kalyan Banerjee under Rule 347. On his suspension, the Speaker conducted voting among the members present in the meeting, in which Banerjee was suspended for a day by nine votes against seven. He left the meeting after the uproar.

However, Kalyan Banerjee himself got injured in the bottle breaking incident. His thumb and finger are injured. He was given first aid and required four stitches. The meeting was stopped for some time after the incident. It is noteworthy that when there was an argument and ruckus between the MPs of Trinamool and BJP, many well-known personalities including retired judges and Supreme Court lawyers were also present in the meeting. He was called to give his opinion to the committee on this issue.

It is being told that Kalyan Banerjee wanted to speak before his turn. He had spoken three times before and wanted to speak again. But the BJP MP opposed it. After this a heated argument started between the two. Both also used abusive language. Meanwhile, Kalyan Banerjee suddenly picked up the bottle and slammed it, due to which the glass hit his own hand. After this he threw the broken bottle towards the chairman. It is noteworthy that the Waqf Amendment Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha on August 8 and was sent to the JPC amid objections from the opposition. The committee has to submit its report to the Lok Sabha in the first week of the next Parliament session.
