The incident with the 82-year-old chairman of Vardhaman Group has drawn attention towards the increasing cyber crime in India. Chairman SP Oswal was defrauded of approximately Rs 6.9 crore. The swindlers called him to a fake online hearing of the Supreme Court and got him to transfer this amount by threatening to send him to jail. Although countless cases of digital and online fraud have come to light recently, the practice of cheating by pretending to attend a Supreme Court hearing was never heard of before. In the online court hearing, a person appeared as Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. During this time, he was asked to deposit Rs 6.9 crore in an account as part of the investigation. Some time ago the Government of India had issued a warning about cyber crimes. The Home Ministry had said that it is possible that such incidents are being carried out by criminal gangs located across the border. According to NCRB, 52,974 cases of cyber crime were registered in India in 2021. In 2022, there was an increase of about 24 percent and a total of 65,893 cases were registered.
Researchers from the Sociology Department of Oxford University, Britain, released the world’s first cyber crime index this year. India got a special place in it. In the research report titled ‘Mapping Global Geography of Cyber Crime with the World Cyber Crime Index’, experts told where cyber crimes are happening the most. There are names of 15 countries in this list, in which India has come at tenth place. Although the Union Home Ministry has expressed suspicion that cyber crime incidents are being carried out from abroad, there are media reports according to which many cities of India have become the hub of cyber criminals. Small incidents are happening on a daily basis. The real issue is why the government’s cyber crime prevention agencies have not been successful in stopping them? If the web of crime continues to spread, then occasionally incidents like the one of which Oswal has become a victim are bound to happen.
