Cyclone Dana: Air service restored in West Bengal after 15 hours

Kolkata. The closed flight services at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport have been resumed on Friday. This flight was stopped for 15 hours. Similarly, train services from Sealdah division of Eastern Railway, which were suspended from 8 pm on Thursday night, also resumed after 10 am on Friday. The airport was closed as a precautionary measure after Cyclone Dana made landfall in Odisha early Friday. This air service remained disrupted from 6 pm on Thursday to 9 am on Friday. However, as per the latest information available, after surveying the situation the airport authorities decided to resume flight services from 8 am onwards. Sources said that the first flight to take off from Kolkata airport on Friday morning was for Imphal. Similarly, the first flight to reach here was from New Delhi. Since Thursday, all precautionary measures have been taken to prevent waterlogging on the runway at Kolkata Airport. High capacity pumps have been installed there to take out the accumulated water if needed.

An Eastern Railway official said that train services from this division will continue as per schedule from now on. However, the crowd of passengers in suburban trains on Friday was less than normal days. Apart from the long distance trains already announced, no new announcement of cancellation of any other train was made. Meanwhile, state government sources said that after spending the night at the state secretariat Nabanna, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has become active since Friday morning and is taking stock of the situation amid heavy rains in various areas of the state. CM is continuously talking to the District Magistrates and Nodal Officers of those districts. He is keeping a close eye on the two coastal districts of East Midnapore and South 24 Parganas which are most affected by the rains. Several cabinet members have been directed to meet people in the affected areas and monitor relief operations. A member of the state cabinet said, “Similar instructions have been given to our party MLAs also.
