Why celebrate Diwali?
On the day of Diwali, Lord Ram returned to Ayodhya after completing his 14 years of exile. To welcome Lord Ram, the people of Ayodhya had lit ghee lamps and celebrated the return of Lord Ram. Since then the celebration of Diwali started. From then till today people light lamps and worship Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi on Diwali.
Diwali is not celebrated in these states
The festival of Diwali is not celebrated in the Indian state of Kerala. Diwali is celebrated with great pomp in Kochi city of Kerala. Apart from this, Diwali is not celebrated at some places in Tamil Nadu.
What is the reason?
The people of Kerala consider King Mahabali as their king. It is believed that the festival of Diwali is not celebrated here due to the death of King Mahabali on the day of Diwali. Apart from this, the second reason is that the number of Hindus is less there, hence the festival of Diwali is celebrated less here.
Why is Goddess Lakshmi worshipped?
According to the scriptures, when the gods and demons were churning the ocean. Then 14 gems were born from the churning of the ocean, one of which was Mother Lakshmi. It is believed that Goddess Lakshmi was born on the new moon day of Kartik month. Therefore, Lord Ganesha and Mother Lakshmi are worshiped on the day of Diwali. According to religious beliefs, worshiping Goddess Lakshmi on this day brings happiness, prosperity, wealth, fame and glory and all the wishes of the devotees are fulfilled.
