It was built in the 12th century, and was earlier known as Sihamasanpuri, which highlights its historical importance. Local people say that when the doors of the temple are opened again after a year on Diwali, the lamp keeps burning and the flowers also do not wither.

Many stories related to Hasanamba temple are popular. According to one of the stories, there was a demon named Andhakasura. Who pleased Lord Brahma by performing rigorous penance and obtained the boon of becoming invisible. After receiving the boon from Lord Brahma, Andhakasura started troubling humans and sages. In such a situation, Lord Shiva took the responsibility of killing that demon. But every drop of that demon’s blood would turn into a demon. Then to kill him, Lord Shiva created Yogeshwari Devi through penance, who destroyed Andhakasura.
