Why confusion regarding Diwali?
The dates of Hindu festivals are not based on the English calendar. The Hindu calendar does not follow a time cycle of 12:00 AM to 12:00 AM. Our Samvatsara starts from Chaitra month, which usually falls during March-April. While the Sun’s time remains constant, the Moon’s position varies according to season and distance from Earth. The movement of the Moon is between 12 to 14 degrees, which determines the dates.
If today morning was Panchami Tithi, it means that the position of the Moon at that time was in accordance with Panchami. The date is determined based on the moon, and we have to see what date it was at the time of sunrise.
According to astrologer, Diwali is celebrated on the new moon date of Kartik month. Each date can be from 19 hours to 26 hours. When we try to match it with the English date, it becomes difficult because the English calendar is based on hours, minutes and seconds, whereas the Panchang is based on Ghati, Pal and Vipal. That is why this time there is confusion regarding the exact date of Diwali.
Will Diwali be on 31st October?
Both Diwali and Janmashtami are festivals celebrated at night. Just as Lord Ram returned to Ayodhya at night and Shri Krishna was also born at night, similarly Diwali is also celebrated on the new moon night. According to astrologers, Amavasya date is important for Diwali. This year Amavasya Tithi is falling on 31st October and not on 1st November. If there is no Amavasya, then it is not possible to celebrate Diwali because it is a festival of Amavasya. Therefore, since there is no Amavasya on the night of 1st November, Diwali cannot be celebrated on that day. (diwali 2024)
According to the astrologer, in the English calendar the time is calculated from 12:00 midnight, whereas in the Hindu calendar, the calculation of Ghati, Pal and Vipal starts from sunrise. Due to the difference in calculation of English time and dates, confusion is arising that there are two Muhurtas. Whereas in reality, the Muhurta is the same and the festival is also the same. The date is formed by the difference in the movements of the Sun and the Moon, and is difficult to match accurately with the English date. This is why people think that there are two different dates for Diwali, whereas it is not so.
