Diwali Date 2024: This year, there is confusion among the people regarding the date of Diwali, due to which the question is arising whether Diwali should be celebrated on 31st October or 01st November. The reason for the confusion is that this time Kartik Amavasya Tithi is falling on two days instead of one.
In Sanatan Dharma, dates and fasts and festivals are calculated on the basis of Vedic calendar. Traditionally, the festival of Diwali is celebrated on the new moon day of Kartik month. But this year Amavasya Tithi is being extended to both 31st October and 01st November, due to which confusion has arisen among the people.
To solve this dilemma, advice has been taken from experienced astrologers and leading astrology and Sanskrit institutions across the country, so that the correct date can be determined. According to the calendar, Diwali will be celebrated on the day when Amavasya Tithi prevails in the night, which symbolizes the festival of lights. This situation will soon be clarified with the final advice of astrologers.

When to celebrate Diwali on 31st October or 1st November
Dates have special significance in Hindu religion, and Udaya Tithi is considered even more important among them. Udaya Tithi means the date which is effective at the time of sunrise, and most of the fasts and festivals are celebrated on its basis. There is difference of opinion regarding the date of Diwali this year also on the same basis.
Some people believe that it would be appropriate to celebrate Diwali on November 1, giving priority to Udaya Tithi, because on that day, Amavasya Tithi will be at the time of sunrise. On the other hand, some people argue that Lakshmi Puja on Diwali is always performed during Kartik Amavasya falling between Pradosh Kaal (evening time) and midnight. On this basis, they consider it correct to celebrate Diwali on 31st October, because on that day there will be a coincidence of Amavasya Tithi during Pradosh period.
If these two opinions are seen according to astrology and Muhurat Shastra, then according to traditional belief, Pradosh Kaal and Nishith Kaal have special importance for Lakshmi worship. Therefore, selection of date will depend on which date will be in effect at the time of puja.
What are the rules of Vedic scriptures
According to the scriptures, the auspicious time to worship Lakshmi on Diwali is during Pradosh Kaal i.e. after sunset till late night during Amavasya Tithi. It is considered extremely auspicious to worship Lakshmi and celebrate the festival of Diwali in conjunction with Amavasya Tithi, Pradosh Kaal, and Nishith Kaal. According to religious beliefs, Goddess Lakshmi appeared during the Pradosh period, hence Lakshmi worship and sadhana hold special significance during the Nishith period. (Diwali Date 2024)
According to the Vedic calendar this year, Amavasya Tithi will start on 31st October 2024 at 3:12 pm and will last till the evening of 01st November. The Vedic status of Diwali will remain true from Pradosh Kaal till the night of 31st October. At the same time, Amavasya Tithi on November 01 will be at the time of sunrise, but it will end at 6:16 pm.
However, in some almanacs, the end of Amavasya Tithi is stated before sunset. Generally, Udaya Tithi is given priority in fasts and festivals, but in festivals like Diwali, Lakshmi worship is especially important during Pradosh period and Nishith period.
On this basis, most of the scholars and astrologers are advising to celebrate Diwali on 31st October 2024, because Amavasya Tithi will remain in effect throughout the night on this day. Therefore, to get auspicious results, worship Lakshmi and celebrate Diwali on 31st October.
Lakshmi Puja Muhurta on Diwali
According to the calendar, the festival of Diwali is celebrated every year on the Pradoshvyapini Amavasya date of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. The first auspicious time for worshiping Lakshmi-Ganesh on 31st October is being found during Pradosh period itself. (Diwali Date 2024)
On October 31, Pradosh Kaal will last from 05:36 pm till 08.11 pm. Whereas Vrishabha ascendant will remain from 06.25 in the evening till 08.20 in the night (as per Delhi time). In such a situation, householders should worship Lakshmi during this time.
For Tantra-Mantra Sadhana and Tantric activities, worshiping during Nishith period is considered more beneficial. The auspicious time for worship during Nishith period on 31st October will be from 11.39 to 12.31 in the night.
Importance of worshiping Lakshmi during stable ascendant and Pradosh period
Maa Lakshmi appeared during the Pradosh period and by worshiping Maa Lakshmi in a stable ascendant, Mahalakshmi remains stable. In such a situation, it would be best to worship Mahalakshmi and Lord Ganesha on Diwali in the Taurus ascendant falling during Pradosh period. According to the Panchang, on October 31, the Taurus Ascendant will remain from 6:25 to 8:20 in the evening. Besides, Pradosh Kaal will also be available at this time. Keeping in mind Pradosh Kaal, Vrishabha Lagna and Choghadiya, the best time for Lakshmi Puja will be between 06:25 to 7:13 in the evening of 31st October. Overall, this auspicious time of 48 minutes will be best for Lakshmi worship.
