Kolkata. Despite the Supreme Court’s order, the doctors of Kolkata did not end their strike and did not return to work even after the 5 pm deadline was over. Now it remains to be seen what action the state government takes against them. It is worth noting that the strike of junior doctors in protest against the rape and murder of a junior doctor on August 9 at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital continued for the 31st day on Tuesday.
Doctors took out a march to Swasthya Bhavan on Tuesday. They are demanding that the state health secretary should also be dismissed. Earlier, there was a demand to suspend the Kolkata Police Commissioner, which Mamata Banerjee rejected saying that an experienced police officer is needed for security during Durga Puja.
However, in the hearing on September 9, the Supreme Court had asked the doctors to return to work before 5 pm on September 10. The court had said that if the doctors do not obey the order, the state government will be free to take action against them. On the other hand, the junior doctors say that they and the victim have not got justice, so they will not return to work. The doctors had also given the government time till 5 pm to accept their demands, however the deadline has expired. On the other hand, the CBI judicial custody of former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandeep Ghosh, has been extended till September 23. He has been arrested on charges of financial irregularities in the college.
