Doctors refuse to end strike

KolkataThe junior doctors, who have been protesting and striking for the last 39 days in protest against the rape and murder of a junior doctor on August 9 at RG Kar Hospital, have refused to end the strike. After meeting Mamata Banerjee two days ago on Monday, it was believed that the strike would now end. Mamata Banerjee had accepted three out of five demands of the striking doctors and also removed the Kolkata Police Commissioner.

Refusing to end the strike even after the Mamata government accepted three demands, the doctors on Wednesday sent an email to Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant demanding another meeting. The doctors say that only half of their demands have been met. The doctors are adamant on the demand to remove the state health NS Corporation. They are also demanding to end the culture of intimidation in hospitals.

On Wednesday evening, the Chief Secretary called 30 doctors for a meeting. Earlier on September 16, a meeting was held between junior doctors and Mamta Banerjee. In this, Mamta had accepted three out of five demands of the doctors. On Tuesday, she removed Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal from the post. Manoj Verma was made the Commissioner in his place. She also removed two officers of the Health Department.

Meanwhile, in the case of rape and murder of the junior doctor, the West Bengal government suspended Tala police station in-charge Abhijit Mandal. Abhijit was arrested by the CBI team on 14 September.
