New Delhi. Voting was held on Friday, September 27 on the only vacant seat of the Standing Committee of Delhi Municipal Corporation i.e. MCD and BJP won the election in one-sided voting. Delhi Mayor Shaili Oberoi had refused to hold elections but voting took place on the orders of Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena. Aam Aadmi Party and Congress boycotted voting. Nevertheless elections were held, in which BJP won. BJP candidate Sunder Singh got all the 115 votes of the party councillors, while Aam Aadmi Party’s Nirmala Kumari did not get any votes. Congress and Aam Aadmi Party did not participate in this election.
With this victory, BJP has 10 members in the 18-member Standing Committee of Delhi Municipal Corporation, while AAP has eight members. The seat where the elections were held had become vacant after BJP leader Kamaljit Sehrawat was elected MP from West Delhi. This election was to be held on 26 September. But the election was postponed after the drama that lasted till late night. Then the time for elections was fixed at 1 pm on Friday.
But at one o’clock in the afternoon an uproar started in the House. When the councilors reached MCD, they were searched to ensure that no one was going inside with a mobile phone. After this there was an uproar. When Mayor Shelly Oberoi entered the House, she had expressed concern over the security check of councilors. He had claimed that this is happening for the first time in the history of MCD. After the uproar, the Mayor ordered elections to be held on October 5, but Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena reversed his decision. On the orders of the Lieutenant Governor, MCD Commissioner Ashwini Kumar conducted the elections.
