Tokyo. Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has once again become the Prime Minister of the country. On Monday, the Parliament of Japan elected him as the next Prime Minister. Parliamentary elections were held in Japan on 27 October. Ishiba’s Liberal Democratic Party, LDP, lost its majority in this election. LDP got only 191 seats in the parliamentary elections and lost 65 seats. This was the worst performance of the party in the last 15 years.
On Monday, 11 November, a special session of Parliament was called to elect the Prime Minister. For the first time in the last 30 years, voting took place in Japan to elect the Prime Minister. Ishiba, with the support of other parties, defeated key opposition leader Yoshihiko Noda by 221 votes to 160. However, for a majority in the 465-seat Parliament, a figure of 233 is required, which Ishiba could not achieve. This means that he will face difficulty in running the government.
