Justice Sanjeev Khanna becomes the 51st Chief Justice of India

New Delhi. Justice Sanjiv Khanna was sworn in as the Chief Justice of India (CJI) by President Draupadi Murmu on Monday. At the age of 65, Justice DY Chandrachud retired from the post of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on November 10. After this, the name of Justice Sanjiv Khanna was recommended by Justice DY Chandrachud for the post of Chief Justice. Justice Sanjiv Khanna, born on 14 May 1960, studied law from the Law Campus of Delhi University.

He also held the post of judge of Delhi High Court. He also served as the acting chairman of the National Legal Services Authority. If we talk about his legal journey, he has been an important part of many historic decisions, mainly the case of sanctity of EVMs, the case of interim bail of Arvind Kejriwal, the case of ending the electoral bond scheme and Article The issue of abrogation of Article 370 is included. Justice Sanjeev Khanna has been an important part of the decisions given in these cases. Justice Sanjiv Khanna was elevated as a Supreme Court judge on 18 January 2019.

Hailing from an eminent family of Delhi, Justice Khanna is the son of former Delhi High Court judge Justice Dev Raj Khanna and nephew of former Supreme Court chief Justice H R Khanna. The tenure of Justice Sanjeev Khanna will be till 13 May 2025 i.e. a total of 6 months. After taking oath as a judge in the Supreme Court on January 18, 2019, he has been a part of 456 benches. During this period he has also written 117 decisions.
