History of Karwa Chauth
According to mythology, women observe this fast for the long life of their husbands. The tradition of observing this fast has been going on since the Satya Yuga. It started with Savitri’s devotion to her husband. According to mythology, when Yamraj, the god of death, came to take Savitri’s husband with him, Savitri stopped him and got her husband back with her firm resolve. Another story of Karva Chauth is also related to the Pandavas. Draupadi, the wife of the Pandavas, also kept this fast. According to this story, during the exile period, Arjun had gone to Nilgiri mountain to do penance, then Draupadi sought help from Lord Krishna to protect Arjun. Lord Krishna asked Draupadi to keep the same fast as Mother Parvati had kept for Lord Shiva. After this, Draupadi also did the same and after some time Arjun returned safely. Special importance of moon on Karva Chauth
This fast starts with sunrise in the morning and is broken in the evening when the moon rises. The moon has special importance in this festival. Chaturthi Mata and Ganesha are also worshipped on this day. According to the scriptures, the moon is worshipped on this day for good fortune, protection of son, wealth, husband and to avoid troubles.
After fasting for the whole day, when women look at the moon through a sieve on Chaturthi, they feel a deep love for their husband and a special glow appears on their face. This makes the youth of women eternal and their married life happy.
