Kolkata. Mamata Banerjee’s efforts to negotiate with junior doctors who have been on strike for 36 days in protest against the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Hospital and to end the strike did not succeed even on Saturday. On Saturday, Mamata herself went to the place where the doctors were protesting. She said that it was not the CM but Didi who had come to meet them. Five hours later, at around six in the evening, the doctors reached the Chief Minister’s residence, but there they again insisted on live telecasting the meeting and that’s when the matter got worse. The government was not ready for this.
When the junior doctors reached the Chief Minister’s residence in the evening, they again demanded a live telecast of the meeting with the Chief Minister. The government was not ready for this. Mamata Banerjee came out of her residence and told the doctors that she was ready for video recording and would give them the video tape later. But the doctors were not ready. Hurt by this, Mamata said that they cannot continue insulting her like this.
Earlier, around 1.30 pm, Mamata Banerjee personally went to meet the junior doctors protesting outside the Health Building. The doctors have been protesting there since September 10. Mamata told the doctors – It is not my position, but the position of the people that is bigger. I have come to meet you not as the Chief Minister, but as your sister. Mamata said – you go back to work, I will consider the demands. Mamata said – I will ask the CBI to hang the culprits. I salute your protest. I will not let injustice happen to you.
Mamata further said- This is my last attempt at talks. No action will be taken against you because I do not believe in suppressing democratic movements. Along with this, Mamata also announced the dissolution of the Rogi Kalyan Samitis of all the government hospitals in the state. It is worth noting that since September 10, Mamata has taken the initiative to sit and talk with the doctors four times. The doctors rejected every proposal of hers. The doctors are adamant on live telecast of the meeting.
