New Delhi. Big news has come amidst the ongoing debate on the side effects of medicines on the human body. More than 50 medicines sold in the country have failed the test. Paracetamol is one of the most sold medicines. 53 medicines including this have failed the quality test. These include vitamins, sugar and blood pressure medicines as well as antibiotics.
The country’s largest regulatory body, Central Drugs Standard Control Organization, CDSCO, has released a list of these medicines. This list includes calcium and vitamin D3 supplements, anti-diabetes pills and high blood pressure medicines. The list of medicines banned after failing the quality test also includes clonazepam tablets used for seizures and anxiety, pain reliever diclofenac, ambroxol used for respiratory diseases, anti-fungal fluconazole and some multivitamins and calcium tablets.
These medicines are manufactured by big companies like Hetero Drugs, Alkem Laboratories, Hindustan Antibiotics Limited, Karnataka Antibiotics and Pharmaceuticals Limited. Metronidazole, a medicine given for stomach infection, is also included in the list of 53 medicines of CDSCO. It also failed this test. Similarly, another very popular medicine Shelcal has also failed the quality test.
Of the medicines that failed the drug regulator’s test, five were fake. The drug manufacturing companies said that these were not their medicines, but fake medicines were being sold in the market in their name. It is worth mentioning that the central government had banned 156 fixed dose combination, FDC medicines in August this year. These were generally used for fever and cold as well as painkillers, multivitamins and antibiotics. The government said that their use could pose a danger to humans.
