He is coming on a five-day visit to India. During this time he will meet President Draupadi Murmu. He will have bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, October 7. The President of Maldives will also visit Mumbai and Bengaluru during his visit till October 10.
This visit of Muizzu is being seen as an attempt to re-establish bilateral relations after the bitterness in the relations between the two countries. It is noteworthy that relations between India and Maldives had become tense since November last year. Muizzu, who was inclined towards China, had launched a campaign to oust India only after taking over as the President of Maldives. However, he has now clarified that he never launched a campaign to exclude India.
Earlier in June this year, Muizzu had come to New Delhi to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Narendra Modi as Prime Minister for the third time. Then he had said that he was happy to receive Prime Minister Modi’s invitation and attend his swearing-in. But no diplomatic talks took place at that time. Only then will technically this be his first bilateral visit. During this visit Mohammad Muizzu will meet President Draupadi Murmu. During his visit to India, Muizzu will also visit Mumbai and Bengaluru.
