Muslim, Dalit vote tussle in UP

Politics of Uttar Pradesh is becoming interesting. There seems to be complete harmony between the Congress and the Samajwadi Party and discussions are also being held between the two parties on seat sharing for the by-elections to be held on 10 assembly seats. But Samajwadi Party leaders want Congress to listen to him silently. Contest the elections on the number of seats given by the party. On the other hand, Congress is feeling that it has a big contribution in SP’s victory in Uttar Pradesh because because of it, Muslim and Dalit votes have been given to the alliance, hence it is now demanding more share. It is believed that if Congress wins in Haryana and its performance in Jammu and Kashmir is good, then its claim on Muslim and Dalit votes will further increase.

On the other hand, Samajwadi Party is elated with the victory of its Dalit candidate Awadhesh Prasad from the general seat of Faizabad. That’s why the distribution of 10 seats for the by-election is stuck. SP wants Congress to contest on one or two seats. But Congress wants equal number of seats or wants to fight on at least four seats. There is no dispute on the Ghaziabad seat adjacent to Delhi. But there is a tussle going on between the two parties regarding Meerapur seat in Western Uttar Pradesh as well as Phulpur and Majhwan seats in Eastern Uttar Pradesh. The bargaining power of Congress may increase after the election results of two states.
