Story of Mata Shailputri, the first form of Maa Durga

According to the legend, once Prajapati Daksh decided to perform a yagya. For this he sent invitations to all the gods and goddesses. Prajapati Daksh did not invite his daughter Sati and son-in-law Lord Shiva for the Yagya. Goddess Sati was eager to go to that yagya but Lord Shiva forbade her from going without invitation. But Goddess Sati did not listen to Mahadev and went to her father’s place for the Yagya. (Navratri Day 1 Mother Shailputri)

When Goddess Sati reached the yagya of her father Prajapati Daksh, no one there welcomed her lovingly. On the contrary, he and Lord Shiva were ridiculed. Goddess Sati was deeply hurt by this insulting behavior and unable to bear the insult of her husband, she committed suicide in the Yagya Kund in anger. When Lord Shiva came to know of this, filled with sorrow and anger he reached the yagya site and destroyed the yagya. It is believed that after this Goddess Sati took rebirth in the form of daughter Parvati in the house of Himalaya. Because she was the daughter of the king of the mountains, she was called Shailputri.
