Ramallah. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the ‘terrorist’ attacks targeting Lebanon. These explosions have caused a large number of casualties. The President expressed Palestine’s solidarity with the Lebanese government and citizens against the ‘terrorism’ that affected innocent civilians. He expressed condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
The presidency described the attacks as a “violation” of Lebanon’s sovereignty and said the incidents posed a threat to international peace and security. He stressed Palestinian commitment to Lebanon’s security, stability and sovereignty. Explosions of wireless communications equipment across Lebanon killed 14 people and wounded more than 450 on Wednesday, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry, a day after attacks targeted pagers used by Hezbollah members.
As a result, 12 people, including two children, were killed and about 2,800 people were injured. United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk described the explosions of communication equipment in Lebanon as ‘shocking’. He said that its impact on civilians cannot be ‘accepted’. Turk stressed the need for an independent, thorough and transparent investigation into these mass explosions. He said that those responsible for ordering and carrying out the attacks should be held accountable.
