race to buy votes

The path that political parties have followed, It is clear from this that Maharashtra will have no option other than taking more loans and repaying the loan. Also, this situation will affect basic human development. But right now everyone is worried about buying votes!

When both the major alliances in Maharashtra – BJP-led Mahayuti and Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MAVIA) released their manifestos, there were more similarities than differences. The difference is only on social-communal issues. For example, Mahayuti has promised to make a strict law to stop religious conversion, while Maviya has promised to conduct caste census and remove the 50 percent limit of reservation. The point of similarity is the generous promises to siphon money from the government coffers to woo voters. It does not seem that Congress and its allies have been affected by the recent comment of party president Mallikarjun Kharge, in which he had advised not to make such promises which would be difficult to fulfill in view of the fiscal situation. In fact, Kharge himself arrived to release the manifesto of Maviya.

In this manifesto, women will be given Rs 3,000 every month. And providing the facility of free bus travel, giving one lakh rupees to every girl on completing 18 years of age, three lakh rupees to the farmers. 50,000 to waive off loans up to Rs. 50,000 and repay regular loans. Incentive amount of Rs 4,000 to every youth. There are promises like unemployment allowance and filling 2.5 lakh vacant government posts. However, Mahayuti is also not behind in making such promises. He also promised loan waiver, Rs 2,100 per month to 2.5 crore women, Rs 10,000 to ten lakh students. Promises like scholarship, re-imbursing tuition fees of students from economically weaker section etc. have been included in their manifesto.

Apparently, both these fronts have completely ignored the warning given by CAG about the fiscal condition of the state. CAG had warned that the state has to repay a debt of Rs 2.75 lakh crore within the next seven years. It is clear from the path the political parties are following that the state will have no option other than taking more loans and repaying the loan. Also, this situation will affect basic human development. But right now everyone is worried about votes!
