The resignation of former IAS officer and Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Jawahar Sarkar from the party and Rajya Sabha is a warning bell for Mamata Banerjee’s politics. Jawahar Sarkar is an independent thinker and an educated leader. Even when he was in the central government, his work was very objective and he was considered an officer who did not take decisions under pressure. He was sent to the Rajya Sabha by Mamata Banerjee in August 2021 and he still has more than one and a half years left in his tenure. He would have retired in April 2026. But he decided to resign and questioned the functioning of the party and the government.
The immediate reason for his resignation is the events after the incident of rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Hospital, but it is being said that he was already vocal on the issue of corruption and had conveyed his views to Mamata Banerjee. In fact, the Jawahar government has raised the question that after the RG Kar Hospital incident, efforts were made to cover up the matter and save the accused. The attitude of the police and the entire administration was very bad. They were hoping that Mamata Banerjee would take some action but they were disappointed. His resignation will not only give strength to the protesting doctors but will also give strength to the BJP. This is the first major resignation of Mamata’s party on any policy or work related issue. It is being considered as a beginning. It is being said that this is the beginning of an atmosphere like Nandigram. There are less than two years left for the elections and before that Mamata seems to be trapped in big trouble.
