New Delhi. The Mamata government has finally had to bow down to the demands of the doctors who have been protesting for the last several days in the RG Kar rape and murder case of Kolkata. After a five-hour meeting with the delegation of West Bengal Junior Doctors Forum on Monday, CM Mamata Banerjee has accepted their demands. Let us know what the doctors demanded from the Bengal government and what steps CM Mamata has taken regarding their demands. Actually, a trainee doctor was raped and murdered on 9 August last month at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. When the matter came to light, the doctors took to the streets to get justice for the victim. Doctors protested not only in the country but also abroad regarding this matter. The doctors on strike to get justice for the victim had put forward some demands before the Mamata government. The first demand was that the accused involved in this incident and the culprits who tampered with the scene of crime should be arrested.
He put forward the second demand that action should be taken against former Principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandeep Ghosh. Apart from this, the security of the employees associated with the medical field should be increased. Also, action should be taken against all the guilty officers including Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. In this connection, CM Mamata Banerjee held a meeting with the delegation of West Bengal Junior Doctors Forum on Monday. This meeting lasted for about five hours. After this, CM Mamata Banerjee agreed to some of the demands of the striking doctors. She has taken action against four officers including Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and Deputy Commissioner (North) Abhishek Gupta. This also includes officers associated with the Health Department. Mamata Banerjee said in a statement that our government has decided to replace Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal. Apart from this, Deputy Commissioner (North Division) of Kolkata Police Abhishek Gupta will also be replaced. Along with this, the Director of Health Services and Director of Medical Education of the state will also be changed.
Banerjee said that we have accepted most of the demands of the junior doctors and we hope that the junior doctors will now return to work in view of the plight of patients coming to the state-run medical colleges and hospitals. However, despite the Chief Minister’s announcement, the West Bengal Junior Doctors Forum (WBJDF) issued a statement. He said, “They will not withdraw their ‘work stop’ movement in support of their demands in the case of rape and murder of a junior doctor of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, until the Chief Minister removes the key government officials as per the demand of the junior doctors. In this case, the intention of the police-administration has also come under question. The Bengal government has got into trouble due to the continuous negligence shown by the Kolkata Police and the hospital administration in the case. First, an attempt was made to portray the rape and murder case as a suicide.
After this, a conspiracy was hatched to hide the truth of the death of the junior doctor. Not only this, negligence was also shown at the crime scene. The matter caught fire when the police took strict action against the protesting doctors and lathicharged them. Talking about the latest developments in the RG Kar rape and molestation case, the main accused of the incident, Sanjay Rai, has already been arrested. At the same time, former principal Sandeep Ghosh has also been arrested. Apart from this, the officer of Tala police station has been arrested. The Mamata government has formed a task force under the leadership of the Chief Secretary on the issue of security in hospitals and medical colleges. It will include Home Secretary, DGP, Kolkata Police Commissioner and representatives of doctors.
