Some MLAs, including the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and People’s Conference, introduced a new resolution in the Jammu-Kashmir Assembly on Thursday demanding immediate restoration of Articles 370 and 35A in their original form. He also called for rolling back all the changes made in 2019, including withdrawing special status from the erstwhile state and making it a Union Territory. The Modi government had abrogated Article 370, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, in 2019 and divided the erstwhile state into two union territories, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Article 35A provides special rights to the permanent residents of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.
A day before this resolution of other MLAs, including PDP and People’s Conference, the ruling National Conference (NC) resolution related to special status was passed in the Assembly, in which the Center has been asked to prepare a constitutional mechanism to restore the special status of the erstwhile state and A request has been made to hold talks with the elected representatives on this issue. As soon as the House proceedings began on Thursday morning, BJP members started creating ruckus over the resolution passed on Wednesday. Amidst the uproar, PDP and People’s Conference MLAs presented a new proposal to Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather.
The proposal was moved by PDP members Waheed Para (MLA Pulwama) and Faiyaz Mir (MLA Kupwara), People’s Conference MLA from Handwara Sajjad Lone, Awami Ittehad Party MLA from Langate Sheikh Khurshid (brother of MP Sheikh Abdul Rashid alias Engineer Rashid) and Presented by Shabbir Kullay, independent MLA from Shopian. The resolution said that this House strongly condemns the unconstitutional and unilateral removal of Article 370 and Article 35A by the Government of India and passing of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act, 2019. The resolution said these actions have stripped Jammu and Kashmir of its special status and statehood and have served to undermine the fundamental guarantees and protections granted to the region and its people by the Constitution of India.
The resolution also said that this House unequivocally demands the immediate restoration of Article 370 and Article 35A in their original, unamended form and withdrawal of all changes made by the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act, 2019. Is. However, due to the uproar by BJP MLAs in protest against the resolution passed on Wednesday, the Assembly Speaker adjourned the House for the day. There was an uproar in the House on Wednesday also regarding the proposal and BJP members protested strongly, due to which the proceedings of the House were repeatedly disrupted. Ultimately, the Speaker had to adjourn the proceedings of the House for the day.
