Colombo. After the economic crisis two years ago, the people of Sri Lanka are going to elect the President once again. The new President of Sri Lanka will be elected on Saturday, 21 September. A total of 32 candidates are in the fray for this. But the main contest is between three candidates. Current President Ranil Wickremesinghe is lagging behind in the contest. Last time he became the President with the help of the Rajapaksa family. In the surveys conducted before the election, he is being shown in third place. He is contesting the election as an independent.
According to a survey conducted before the elections, the presidential candidate of the National People’s Power (NPP) alliance, Anura Kumara Disanayake, is leading the race. He is considered pro-China. Anura Kumara Disanayake is the leader of the leftist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, JVP. He is the presidential candidate from the NPP alliance. The special thing about Anura Disanayake is that during the election campaign, he has promised the people of Sri Lanka that after winning, he will cancel the project of the Indian company Adani Group. He has called Adani’s project a threat to Sri Lanka’s energy sovereignty.
Apart from Anura, there are three other big candidates in the presidential race. Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa is at number two in the survey. Current President Ranil Wickremesinghe is trailing him at number three. Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s son Namal Rajapaksa is also in the race. The survey also states that his chances of winning are very low. According to media reports, the economic crisis of two years ago in Sri Lanka is still fresh in people’s memory. For this reason, the Rajapaksa family, which has been the most powerful for the last two decades, seems to be out of the race.
