After the air quality remained in very poor category for 13 consecutive days since Diwali in the capital Delhi and NCR area, the Supreme Court has now asked the Delhi government to take a decision before November 25 about banning firecrackers in Delhi for the whole year. Earlier, Delhi government’s lawyer had said before the Supreme Court that the government will take the decision to implement the ban on firecrackers for the whole year after consulting all the concerned departments.
In the Supreme Court, the bench of Justice Abhay Oak and Justice Augustine George Masih told Delhi Police on Monday – Delhi Police did not implement the restrictions seriously. The court said that Delhi Police Commissioner should create a special cell to ban firecrackers. The Supreme Court directed the Delhi government to decide on a permanent ban on firecrackers before November 25.
During the hearing, a two-judge bench said that no religion encourages any activity that causes pollution. The court said- If firecrackers are burnt in this manner, it also affects the fundamental right to health of the citizens. Living in a pollution free environment is a fundamental right. The court expressed dissatisfaction over the way the ban on firecrackers was implemented. The Supreme Court said that the police did not take the restriction order imposed by the Delhi government on October 14 seriously. Delhi Police should have informed all licensees to stop the sale of firecrackers immediately.
