New Delhi. The Supreme Court has expressed displeasure over bursting of firecrackers in Delhi on the day of Diwali and the next day as well. In this case, the Supreme Court has reprimanded the Delhi government and the police for violating the court order. Taking suo motu cognizance, the court said that the ban on firecrackers could hardly be enforced in the state. The court said that something has to be done so that the orders banning firecrackers are not violated during Diwali next year.
The bench of Justice Abhay S Oka and Justice Augustine George Masih, citing media reports, said that strict action like sealing the campus is needed against those violating the ban. Regarding this matter, the Supreme Court has sought a reply from the Delhi Government and the Police Commissioner within a week on the steps taken to implement the ban on firecrackers. The next hearing will be held on November 14.
During the hearing held on Monday, Amicus Curiae, who was assisting the court, said that incidents of fire in fields are very high during Diwali. A day before Diwali, 160 farms were on fire, while on the day of Diwali this number increased to 605. The percentage of pollution had increased from 10 to about 30. After this, the bench has asked the Punjab and Haryana governments to file their reply by November 14 on the increase in incidents of field fires and stubble burning during the last 10 days of October. The court also said that the Delhi government, while filing the affidavit, will also tell whether there have been incidents of fire in fields within the state limits.
