New Delhi. The Supreme Court has raised questions on the Lieutenant Governor for interfering in the activities of Delhi Municipal Corporation and MCD. In the hearing on Friday, October 4, the Supreme Court raised objection to the election process of the member of the Standing Committee of Delhi Municipal Corporation. The court also questioned Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena’s use of Section 487 of the MCD Act. And also expressed displeasure over the interference of the Lieutenant Governor in the democratic process and ignoring Mayor Shelly Oberoi.
A bench of Justice PS Narasimha and Justice R Mahadevan asked senior advocate Sanjay Jain, appearing for the Lieutenant Governor, – Where did you get the right to disrupt the election under Section 487, especially when the standing committee member is being elected? Why were you in such a hurry that you wanted to hold elections in two days? What will happen to the democratic process if you keep interfering like this?
Along with this, the Supreme Court issued notice on the petition of Mayor Shelly Oberoi challenging the election of the member of the Standing Committee. The court said that elections for the chairman of the standing committee should not be held until the petition is heard after two weeks. If elections are held then we will take it seriously. It is noteworthy that voting for the last vacant seat of the MCD Standing Committee was held on September 27. BJP candidate Sundar Singh got all the 115 votes of the party councillors, while Aam Aadmi Party’s Nirmala Kumari did not get any votes. Because AAP and Congress did not participate in the elections.
