Kolkata. The condition of the junior doctors who are on hunger strike in protest against the incident of rape and murder of a junior doctor of RG Kar Hospital has become critical. It is noteworthy that seven junior doctors are on hunger strike for the last six days. The condition of one of them, Aniket Mahato, has become critical. Aniket has been admitted to RG Kar Hospital itself. Dr. Soma Mukhopadhyay, head of the Critical Care Unit of RG Kar, said that Aniket was brought to the hospital in an unconscious state. The doctor’s condition is critical, he has been kept on oxygen support. A team of five doctors is keeping an eye on him.
A junior doctor told that Aniket, who was on hunger strike, was not even drinking water for the last few days. The health of six more junior doctors who are on hunger strike along with Aniket is also deteriorating. Meanwhile, the Indian Medical Association, IMA, has also written a letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, demanding that the state government take immediate action on the demands of the doctors. IMA has said- Peaceful environment and security are not a luxury. We appeal, resolve this issue.
It is noteworthy that a junior doctor was raped and murdered in RG Kar Hospital on the night of August 8. On August 9, the victim’s body was found in the medical college. From the next day, junior doctors protested for 42 days. The strike ended after three out of five demands of the doctors were accepted. But the doctors started the strike again from October 1 and started the hunger strike from the evening of October 5. A large number of senior doctors have offered to resign in support of the junior doctors who are on hunger strike.
