Netherlands is the only country in the world where you will not find stray dogs. Under a special program run by the government, every dog is collected and vaccinated to control its population. Vaccination is done to prevent diseases like rabies. The Netherlands government has implemented a unique rule.
Last week, an incident came to light which was from Gurugram, adjacent to Delhi. The way property prices are skyrocketing in Gurugram, it is certain that more and more people are turning to this suburb. But if the administration there is unable to provide important facilities to the citizens, then how justified is it to buy such an expensive property. Everyone must have seen the heart-wrenching scenes of Gurugram during the rains.
Similarly, there is another problem which is spread across the country. Be it Delhi NCR, Mumbai or a small town in Kerala, the problem of stray animals is a problem whose solution should be a big responsibility and priority of the government.
A few days ago, an acquaintance of ours was returning to his home in South Delhi in his car at a controlled speed late at night after attending a party at his friend’s house in Gurugram. Suddenly his car collided with a black cow. Many glasses of the car broke and the car suffered a lot of damage. This accident happened due to the absence of street lights on that deserted road. Somehow this gentleman reached his home.
The next day when this incident was shared, the question that arose in everyone’s mind was why the government does not do anything for stray animals? Imagine what would have happened if someone with a two-wheeler had been in their place. Every day we hear about how much harm stray animals, be it cows, bulls or stray dogs, cause to the common citizens. But the government, whether it is the state or the center, is turning a blind eye to this problem.
It is not that the government is not aware of this problem or cannot find a solution to it. You will remember that last year, in preparation for the G20 summit, the country’s capital Delhi was decorated like a bride. The central and Delhi governments took every step to make this summit a success so that the foreign guests attending it do not face any inconvenience. Along with this, orders were also issued to remove stray animals from some areas of Delhi, which were canceled due to the protest of animal lovers. Opposing the order, animal lovers have said that it is in the interest of stray animals. But the question that arises here is how to get rid of this problem?
The problem of stray dogs and cattle is increasing day by day in cities. The general public has to protect themselves from stray dogs and cattle in every street and locality. If we scare these animals with sticks, batons or stones to save them, then animal lovers oppose it. At some places, these people even threaten the citizens with police action. But has any animal lover ever tried to find a solution to this problem? What is the reason that the number of stray animals is increasing day by day?
Before the G-20 summit, when the Delhi Municipal Corporation ordered that stray animals would be removed from certain areas and sent to a safe place, it seemed like a good initiative. Just as many social organizations across the country run cow shelters for the protection of cows, why not make a plan like ‘dog shelter’ for stray dogs as well, where stray dogs are kept in a safe environment. There should also be proper arrangements for the treatment of these mute creatures here. Animal lovers who wish to show their affection towards these mute creatures should take out time and go there regularly and not only feed them but also spend time with them. By doing this, neither will any animal be tortured nor will any common citizen be in any danger from such stray animals.
Netherlands is the only country in the world where you will not find stray dogs. Under a special program run by the government, every dog is collected by the government and vaccinated to control its population. Vaccination is done to prevent diseases like rabies. The Netherlands government has implemented a unique rule. The government there levies a heavy tax on dogs bought from any pet shop. On the other hand, if any citizen adopts these homeless animals, he gets income tax exemption.
As soon as this rule was implemented, people started adopting more and more homeless dogs. Slowly, the number of stray dogs on the streets and neighborhoods of the Netherlands decreased to zero. Animal lover organizations around the world have considered this program to be the safest and most effective. This program not only controls the population of stray dogs but also provides relief to common citizens from this problem.
Be it Kerala, Mumbai, Delhi NCR or anywhere else, such news comes from all over the country where sometimes a child, a delivery person or an elderly person becomes a victim of these stray animals. If someone takes any step to protect himself, then animal lovers or cow protectors create a ruckus. If animal lovers of every city get organized and suggest the Indian government to adopt a model like Netherlands, then the day is not far when our country will also be free from stray animals.
